Wooden shoes are an established part of our Dutch heritage going back to the early
1400's when they first appeared as a sandal with iron straps (sounds comfy). Within
a hundred years they had assumed their present form. The manufacture of shoes from
poplar wood remained unchanged until the begining of the last century when machinery
to automate the process was devised.
The downside of this was that the art of making wooden shoes began to be lost and today
the klompenmaker is nearly extinct.
Wooden shoes are uniquely identified with Holland and now form an important export
and tourist item. Almost lost outside of Holland is the fact that they are comfortable
and practical footwear.
We have a good selection of footwear along with some of the souvenir variety.
