Where can you get Gourmet Smoked Cheese, Belgian Truffles, Dutch Salted Licorice, English Peppermints, Scottish Kippers, Indonesian Spices, Samurai Rice Crackers and Jalopeno Pepper Jelly all in one store? At The Dutch Market, of course.
Yes, we carry many Dutch specialty product and gifts but we don't stop there.
We carry a smorgasbord of imported goods from many cultures.
This is our story:
Charles Huls purchased The Dutch Market Ltd. in 1987.
At that time, there was a single store located on St. Clair Street, (Chatham, Ontario Canada) and had just 3 employees.
In the last ten years, there have been many changes at The Dutch Market.
We still carry all the quality meats, cheeses, licorice, chocolate, groceries and gifts that our customers have come to rely on, but we have added to our selection and expanded our business.
In the mid 90's, Charlie saw a real opportunity to improve the quality of our products and the price competitiveness of our store by importing directly from Europe.
That importing for our own store grew to wholesaling to other Dutch and European Shops.
Today we service bakeries, butcher shops, European specialty shops and grocery stores across Southwestern Ontario.
In 1995, Charlie moved the store to 544 Queen.
(and we have the pictures to prove it)
Street. Our wholesale and importing operation has grown with the addition of new warehousing facilities and staff.
The fall of 1997, saw the beginning of our Internet operation, with Irene Ouellette
taking the lead for those services. All our staff are multi talented and each bring
their strengths to supporting our Wholesale and Retail businesses. We pride
ourselves on having staff that are friendly, responsive to customers
and willing to work as a team.
And it is this teams approach that allows us to explore new ways to grow.
By forming new relationships with companies in Europe, we have been able to expand our selection of products.
Everyone knows the fine reputation the Dutch have in making Cheese, many know the craftsmanship and quality that the Dutch also put into bicycle making.
At the moment, we do not carry any bikes. But upon request, it is possible for us to import a Dutch bike for your special needs.
We have added new products to our grocery selection such as easy to prepare meals and cost conscious staples.
We have also recently added thousands of dollars of new Gifts to our Gift Ware Section which includes Delft Blue Gifts and Plates, Sliver Spoons & Jewelry, Tapes & CDs, Books and Kitchen Accessories.
We offer special local services such as Free Home Delivery to Seniors in Chatham.
We would be really pleased if you would come and visit us, we've even included a map so that you can find us easily.
