Last year, I experienced my 1st dutch christmas while in Amsterdam....the parade on Dec 6 and all that went along with santa comming ashore was something I will not soon forget. Having been an American all my life, I wish I could have been a Dutch child in Amsterdam growing up. I love the Dutch people!

I like the site, though i do find the last comments made to be offensive to this site and my culture. I am 19 and my dad is dutch. Most of my family lives in holland and I go to visit quite often. Good Morning. I find it very offensive when someone talks about Russian and Belgium girls that way. I think whoever wrote those inapropriate messages should appologize to dutch and russian girls. Wow!! What a great site. My father was born near Delft but we did not celebrate Christmas "dutch-style". I am now starting my own family soon and want to learn about my heritage. After watching Miracle on 34th Street, for the 20th time, my husband and I wondered about the Sinterklaas song the little Dutch girl and Kris Kringle sing while in Macy's. So I started to seach the web, and came upon your site. I learned more than I ever expected to learn, in 30 minutes, plus I now know the words and meaning, although I think the movie version lyrics are slightly different. What a great and fun tradition the Dutch have. I have some Dutch ancestory but really knew nothing about the Dutch traditions. Thanks for the education!

My father was born in Amsterdam and I in Canada and we always celebrated St.Nicholas at my Grandmothers house. We are now starting the tradition with our son. Your site was the only place I could find chocolate letters and other Dutch sweets. If anyone knows of a Dutch market in Colorado let me know. My grandparents came from Amsterdam. I remember during the Christmas holidays, we were treated to Boeter Letter (I know I have not spelled this correctly). This was a pastry -shaped in the first initial of a person's name. It was filled with a delicious almond paste. Does anyone know of a Dutch Bakery in the San Fernando Valley area (or Los Angeles area) where this can be purchased. I understand there used to be a Dutch bakery in Pasadena, but don't know if it is still in existence. Thanks for help or suggestions. I love this web site. Carol

I am trying to locate a Gallette iron. I'm finding it is also known as a Belgian Cookie iron, Gaufrettes iron or a Stroopwafel iron. I would really like to have a stove top iron like my mother-in-law. It is a family tradition of hers to make these cookies at Christmas. I would like my own iron to carry the tradition on. What an intereesting and informative Website. I have a Dutch friend who now lives here in the United States and I love to surprise her with little things I have learned about her country. Last Christmas I learned as much as I could about Dutch Christmas and I surprised her on December 6th with a note from Sinterklaas and traditional Dutch treats. She was very impressed. I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Holland a few years ago with college. I found the experience wonderful and miss the amazing foods they have there. Who knows of any shops in or around London which sells dutch things like stroopwafels (with drop probably on the expat's most wanted list!!)verkade chocola, indonesische kruiden voor bv. satesaus etc.etc. you knows which things i mean right!! Er is WEL drop in Engeland het wordt hier licorise genoemd, en voor 10 pennies kun je een heeele lange veterdrop krijgen, verrrukkelijk. Hallo Ik heb een vraag. Ik ben een uitwisselings student, en ik woon nu sinds augustus 2001 hier in Janesville wisconsin. Nu moet ik voor mij nschool een spreekbeurt houden. Gedag Allemaal, Have just discovered this great site, and was compelled to add my name to it as well. My parents, brother and I came to Australia 49 years ago. They have always installed in me, the Dutch way of life. Since I married a Australian-Greek it is hard to keep my Dutch heritage intact.I would love to find some great kroketten recipes. I have been back to Holland, many times, but no relatives seem to know, as they seem to buy them frozen at the supermarket. I just placed another order for Christmas gifts. I can't believe you guys are selling the famous dutch chocolate letters! My American family has never had those, so that will be a real treat at Christmas. My only worry when I order is having the contents arrive in good condition. My name is Maria(maiden name Meijer). I was born in Amsteveen, Holland and a true Nederlander right down to loving the saltiest licorice,zwart/wit Droste chocolates and some baked goods. I married an American born Dutchman that never had the pleasure of tasting some of the treats I remember growing up with. I found lots of items on your website that brought back many joyous memories so of course I ordered them and sent some on to my sister. We spent many hours on IM just recalling what happened when we had this and remember when Pa hid king mints in the cubby in the hallway. I can't tell you how happy we were. We were in our glory and started talking about other treats which brought to mind taai-taai koekjes. I have searched many websites and have yet to find them. In 1972 I served in the Royal Air Force, based near the Dutch border and used to shop frequently in Holland. My favorite snack was frikandellen/fries with mayonaisse, (sausage shaped as opposed to the German round 'burger' type). A recipi from The Netherlands: HACHEE (Nederland) Hoofdgerecht voor 2 personen. BENODIGDHEDEN: 1 pond (magere) varkenslapjes 2 zakjes hacheekruiden 6 of 7 dikke uien ketjap (smelt)sju bindmiddel (mayzena) VOORBEREIDEN: Een dag van tevoren het vlees in blokjes snijden. De hacheekruiden mengen met ketjap en dat door het vlees mengen. Dit een nacht laten intrekken. BEREIDEN: In een laagje sju de gesneden uien een half uur laten pruttelen. Dan het vlees toevoegen en nog een uur laten sudderen. Als laatste aanmengen met bindmiddel. Suggestie: serveren met gekookte aardappelen. Voorbereidingstijd: ongeveer 15 minuten. Bereidingstijd: ongeveer 1 uur en 45 minu-ten.

Just stumbled on this site. Must be homesick even when I am still living in Holland. Not for long though..... hi i was born in amsterdam north in 1947. we migrated to australia in 1957,i was 9 years old. my parents have passed away.i have been ask by my local primary school to talk to the children about my experiences in coming to australia.as i am remembering the past it is making me sad that i have missed so much of my younger days. what i am trying say that i think on hind sight that at 9 yrs. old is not the right time to leave a country where you have lived since birth.does any one else experienced these feelings?

I found this site quiet helpful for people who are fascinated about indonesian and dutch food and for Paula Brunn re: your question about speculaas. You can replace speculaas spice with small amount of nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, star anis or anis and cardamom pod..just blend all together into a blender or food processor until become powder. you can put the mix into a clean and dry jar or small bottle and put in a dry place..you can use this mix for several times.. I love to put small amount of them for apple pie filling..very delicious and aromatic.

Hi, I work with dutch butchers and live in a mostly Dutch community. Recently I recieved an order for Rottwust sausage and we couldn't agree on the recipe. I believe it is similar to our Farmer but in a 35-38 casing. Can anyone help us with their own sausage-making recipes?

I'm not even of dutch descent but i'm hopelessly addicted to dutch salt licorice... does anyone from the pittsburgh area know of any stores here that carry it? please email me. also, Economy Candy on rivington street in nyc (www.economycandy.com) doesn't have the best selection but they have the lowest price i've seen for dutch licorice.

Hello edereeen, het is en pleseere om dit plats te finde. Ik schraf neit so goot, maar ik prebeer. Ik was 4 jaar out toon ik naar Canada kwam. Ik heft myself schrafen geleart. Ik kwan in 1952. Ik sprackt het wal,and miscchien better dan schraften in het Hollanse. Ik hope dt mischein dat ik meer worden can learen. I'm better in the Engilsh language,because Ireceived my education in English schools. I was born in Amsterdam and still have relatives there.Of course I'm looking for two specific receipes, one is Oliebollen. I can remember some of the ingredience but not all. The other was a very rich pastry, something like a sweet buttercookie, and the pie was filled with a fruit which was preserved in wine for months. Can anyone know of this receipe? much appreciated. thanks Mieke

Hello i'm a dutch indonisian/suriname girl.I moved to the states 6 years ago with my husband . He's in the airforce.Is there anybody that lives arond San Antonio that is dutch. I grew up in holland en ik ben bijna mij nederlands verleerd. En bellen naar Nederland elke dag is ook niet te doen.Ik ben 28 jaar ,dus het zal wel leuk zijn om met iemand in contact te komen dat een beetje mij leeftijd is. En ik ben ook opzoek naar een "pom" recept het is een surinaams gerecht. Ik wilde weten hoe die wortel hier heet in de usa dat je in het gerecht doet! Drop me a line if you can. groetjes
